With a deep commitment to uplifting a long-overlooked segment of the healthcare system, he has transformed the landscape for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), setting a benchmark for reform, recognition, and rights.
A Humble Beginning: How Allied Health Organization Pakistan Was Born
A Humble Beginning with a Greater Vision his journey as a medical technician with the Punjab Health Department in the late 1990s. At that time, Allied Health Professionals were referred to as “paramedics.” Consequently, this community faced systemic discrimination, with no opportunities for career growth or advanced education. Doctors often treated paramedics as assistants, thus reinforcing workplace inequality.Recognizing these injustices, Syed Asad committed to uplifting his community. While he started teaching diploma courses for dispensers and medical technicians, he also actively participated in healthcare initiatives such as the National Program, Punjab Health Sector Reform Program, and T.B. DOTS. These roles further exposed the structural challenges faced by Allied Health Professionals, which deepened his resolve to create change.Allied Health Professionals Leadership Receiving Service Structure Notification on 24-11-2011.
A Vision for Change In the mid-90s
A Vision for Change
Syed Asad realized the absence of a service structure and recognition for Allied Health Professionals. As a result, most workers started and ended their careers in the same pay scale without promotion opportunities. To address these issues, he and other advocates established the Allied Health Organization (AHO). Therefore, AHO became a platform for advocating rights and recognition.
Through AHO, Syed Asad introduced an 8-stage service structure, which redefined career paths for Allied Health Professionals. After persistent advocacy, the Punjab government approved these reforms in 2011. Not only was the basic pay scale upgraded from BPS 06 to BPS 09, but promotion channels were also established up to Grade 20. These changes directly benefited 29,000 families in Punjab.
Educational Reforms by Allied Health Organization Pakistan
Syed Asad played a critical role in transforming Allied Health education. As a result of his efforts, BS (Hons) programs were introduced in Punjab, covering fields such as Medical Lab Technology, Radiology, Physiotherapy, and Nutrition. Moreover, this marked a shift from traditional diplomas to advanced academic qualifications. Today, universities and colleges in Pakistan offer over 30 specialized disciplines in Allied Health, thereby positioning it as a vital sector within healthcare.
